What have I learn in this class etc...

I learn a lot about how people represent themselves on line in order to get reacting from others. I learn that long before technology was as advanced as it is now some people had already knew that technology was going to take jobs from people and that computers would be able to do the things that they do know and that anyone would be able to use a computer. My favorite thing about the class is that it is online and we get the opportunity to do weekly blogs. I also like the fact that you respond to our questions very quickly. My least favorite thing was that the extra credit had to be done at a certain time and not at anytime throughout the semester. The class can be improved by having shorter readings and more interesting readings. Some of the readings were easy for me to understand but some of them were kind of hard to understand.

What reading I found interesting

One of the readings from this class that I found interesting was the reading on "Second Life". I thought it was interesting that in the article they pointed out that all online avatars were basically created to look one way. Women had big boobs and were skinny and mean had six packs and they were buff. While in reality most people do not look that way. I also found it wired that some women who participated in second life websites said that they sometimes felt uncomfortable, which was due to the harassment of women by men. I really don't understand why anyone would harass an avatar that just stupid to me. However, I don't think that second life websites should have pictures of naked women or display them as prostitutes because its just sending out the wrong message in general. Those negative images could lead men to saying negative things about women.

How college uses and misuse social media to reach students

The link to this article: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/20/tech/social-media/universities-social-media/index.html?hpt=hp_bn6

This article talks about how using media to attract college students can be good and bad at times. One potential student had the experience of viewing other peoples experience at john Hopkins so she decided that it would be a good idea for her to attend the school. I wish I could have went to some website to view other students experiences with San Jose State before I made the decision to attend school here, I might have decided to attend school somewhere else. This article also talks about the misuses of social media to reach students. One professor decide to make a math music video which seems to be a bit much and I know it had to be extremely boring. Overall though I do think that it is a great idea for students to share their college experience with other students. That way people can make a good choice on where they choose to attend college.

Blogging: Self presentation and privacy

This  blogging  article basically talks about privacy issues  There are three different types of privacy levels that the author talks about in the article which are  Informational, accessibility , and expressive. Accessibility privacy has to be one of the privacy issues that I fear the most. Like wire tapping and video surveillance  type of citations are not cool. Expressive privacy was also interesting like I am sure that some people feel that they cannot say certain things or make certain comments because of the fear of how they will appear to others. All of this talk about privacy makes me think about this blog that we write for class every week. I like the fact that we can write what ever  we want to on our blogs and express our selves and know one knows who we are. Well no one knew who we were until we had to summit video blogs.

The End of books

The End of books is basically an article that discusses how technology is making books obsolete and how using the computer to find out information is more convenient then reading an actual book. The author discusses the benefits of hypertext which allows you to view related links and pictures associate with what every it is your searching for online. I like hypertext but I also like to read stuff in an actual magazine or book. Only because when I look at the computer to long it starts to make my eyes hurt. I just wish someone invents a program that is not expensive that reads articles and books to you so you don't have to actually read them. Its a program like that on academic search primer but it never works when I try to use it. At first I thought the program might not be compatible with my mac but I tried using it on my PC and it did not work either.

Why computer voices are mostly female

This is the link to this article: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/21/tech/innovation/female-computer-voices/index.html?hpt=hp_bn6

This article is interesting I never thought about why most computer voices are female voices. well not all of them are female voices but the majority of them are. However according to this article a lot of I-phone users are wondering why siri's voice is female voice and the reason basically is that more people feel like a womans voice is more pleasant. This is the reason why most automated services use female voices. On the other hand in France and the UK siri is a male voice I wonder why?  In the article it says that I-phone users ask siri what is she wearing and she responds why are you asking me this question. Thats really funny because clearly the majority of the people asking these questions are male. Yea but its an app on the android market called vlingo and its basically just like siri and of course it has a female voice.

Personal Dynamic media

In the article Personal Dynamic Media the author talks about one day having a computer that is as small as a n actual notebook. That also have several features like  music storage , letter storage, and other features. The author says he imagines a notebook that can put out and receive information. He says the first attempt to crate this  kind of note book was in 1967-1969. However from the picture that I saw of it it looked nothing like a notebook. I always wondered why computers use to big so big. I glad over time they have gotten small. Even though he is talking about a notebook type of computer being created now days it seems like he is basically describing  and i-pad. In the conclusion the author ask what would happen in a world where everyone had their own dynabook? I couldn't imagine the world with out computers it's like what would I do in a world with out them.

MC Hammer launching his own search engine

This is the website link http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/20/tech/web/mc-hammer-search-engine/index.html?hpt=hp_bn6.

I cannot believe that Mc Hammer would be trying to create his own search engine. It seems like now days anyone can us there name to create or endorse anything even if they are some washed up celebrity.  Even if he does go through with this Im sure his search engine would not be popular enough to compete with google and Bing. Personally I never use  Bing to find out  anything but I google everything I want a fast answer too. Also I thought Mc Hammer was broke were did he get the money to start his own search engine? There was not that much information in this article about details of this search engine but it has me wondering.I mean if it  that easy to start your own search engine or is Mc hammer just investing his money in some up and coming company. An if that's the case why isn't some celebrity's like Jay-z or 50 Cent involved in this new up and coming search engine.

From computer power and human reason

One of the statements in this article that I found interesting is "That concern that machines will take over not just the jobs that provide us income , but also those cognitive and emotional functions we closely associate with humanity. I agree that computers have taken over many jobs from people , but I don't believe they will take over are cognitive and emotional functions we associate with humanity. This is why I believe that people should work in fields where people are always going to be needed. Health care is a great field to work in that could not be taken over by some machine. Another thing I found interest in this Article is the program called doctor that was created. It was suppose to help people solve their problems but I guess all the answer to any question was vague and not that informative. Its just certain things that should be left up to humans to do because a computer can not relate to someone or interpret in kind of emotion from someone.

Second life

This article discuses the second life that a few people created online and some of the stereotypes when it comes to gender and the experiences they have to deal with online due to gender. Women avatars usually have big breast and look extremely skinny while men are buff and have six packs. In the experiment a few people created avatars and engaged in a second life online. In this virtual world one of the women felt very uncomfortable being represented as a female avatar. So, she decided to change her gender in her second life from female to male. I believe this was do to the fact that most online games are controlled by men. According to the article women are often  harassed and spoken to inappropriate online. If I was a women I would not want to participate in this second life game either all of the images that I seen of women are very explicit.

Facebook to launch China, Report suggest

This is the link to this article:
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/04/11/facebook-launch-china-site-baidu/

This article was very short but it informed me about something I did not know. This article is about launching Facebook in China. Personally I had no idea that people in China did not have access to Facebook. China is a very strict country its like people cannot do anything over there. In the article it stated that China had over 450 million internet users thats a lot of people. However, I wonder what they are doing on the internet because the government blocks the majority of the web sites over there.  I don't think that allowing the people of China to use Facebook  would cause any harm. People should have the right to use the internet they way that they want to especially if they are paying for internet service. Blocking most of the websites in China is just making internet usage extremely boring.  I dont know what I would do if I said in a country like China.

The technology and society

This article is very interesting I agree that television has an affect on society. I could not  image living in a era where television did not exist. When I was younger television was the center of most of our family gatherings. We would watch fights, games, and movies at the house of who ever had the biggest television. In this article the author talks about the cause and affects of technology. He talks about how television has affected our perception of reality and our relationships in the world. Basically I think he means people generally have a tendency to act like or try to look like what it is they are seeing on television. However, it also depends on the community that a person lives in. Some people think they need to have a new car on big rims and other people might think they need to be skinny and have straight hair. It all depends on what a person is watching on television and where they live.

just like me only better

This article is so true people do create their online avatars to look as close to them selves as possible. My avatar for pogo.com looks similar to me except I dress her up to look like a professional work lady. Some people even dress their avatars up as old women with gray hair.  Also I always wondered were the term avatar derived from and this article says it came from the form that gods took when the came to earth. This is obviously some mythological type of thing.  I found the results of this article to be exactly what I expected them to be most  women avatars have then waist, fair skin, thin lips, and full breast. But I thinks its only because those are the only options available when creating and avatar. Like the options for making an avatar on pogo.com are limited to certain psychical characteristics. Its not like you can create an avatar with full lips, a big butt , or thats over weight because those features are not offered.

community media

While reading this article I was informed that in 2003 44 percent  of Americans had created their own content. This lead me to think about youtube and how people will share anything about themselves with strangers. In hopes of getting a lot of views from the public. However, sometimes videos are funny and other times they are very informative. A person can pretty much search youtube and find out anything from how to change a tire to how to bake a cake.  In the article they also talk about self representation and how people should have a voice and state their opinions and Youtube and blogging are the most popular was to be heard. Its like as soon a someone gets a million hits all of a sudden their on the news. I still find that to be amazing its like one minute I'm watching the news and they are talking about unemployed Americans and for some reason it could lead to them discussing how Rebbecca Black got one million hits on youtube.

Uses and Gratification

This article basically discuss some of the reason that young adults use Social network website. Most of the reasons that they state people use SNS is obvious. People want to be able to talk to one another as fast as possible, the connivance of delivery a message to several people at once, and  stay in touch with friends and family. One participant from the study stated that you can think about what you say before you send it to someone. This is also one of the reasons why I like using email and text messaging because you can make things sound better oppose to talking on the phone , but that's only in some situations in my opinion. Another reason why I believe young adults use Social Networking websites a lot is because they are just board. I know people who tweet every single thing they do and update their Facebook status every week.

10 Fascinating Facebook facts and what they say about us

This is the link below:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/social.media/05/26/facebook.facts.cashmore/index.html?hpt=T2

According to this article 56% of Facebook members think that is not responsible to friend your boss on Facebook. I agree if I had a Facebook I wouldn't friend my boss because it would probably  be filled with pictures of me partying and acting crazy. Which is not something I would want my boss to see. It also said that people in Facebook relationships are happier then single people. I disagree I'm not single, but when I am I'm just as happy as I would be if I were in a relationship. Another interesting fact is that 21% of people would breakup via Facebook. This is sad I hope this 21% is predominately teenagers because that has to be really embarrassing to get dump with millions of people to see. The last fact that caught my attention was that 36% of people checked their Facebook, twitts, and texts after sex , which is just rude and embarrassing for their partners

The medium is the message

This article was hard for me to understand I googled the phase and it said that "The medium is the message" has to do with the way that people perceive a message. In the article it talked about how IBM makes computer equipment its what people think when they here IBM, but what IBM really does is process information.  Marshall McLuhan states in the begging of this article that technology has destroyed depth of involvement in work. I think he means that we depend to much on technology. An example might be how the self checkout lines at stores eliminate jobs for people we might have needed a job. He also states that I.Q test are bias and is based on continuous habits because that is what is considered intelligent and it eliminates the "ear man" and the tactile man. I wonder if this means that in order to be intellectually successful on I.Q. test you have to be a basic person with one specific way of understanding things.

consequences of online social networking

While reading this article I was informed that Facebook started out as a social site that was only for students. Then eventually it evolved into one of the most popular social sites. I know you might think this is nothing new but I never had a face book ,nor have I seen the move about Facebook's creation. I found it interesting that according to the studies in this article talking online to people increased a persons self esteem. I would think meeting people in person and having face to face conversations would increase a persons self esteem. The finding of weather online social groups were different from real life social groups were exactly what I expected them to be. It makes sense that people would make more friends, and meet more people online then they would in real life (in person) social groups. I also found it interesting that women spend more time on online social networks then men but women are less likely to add new friends.

Inmates on Facebook? South Carolina Considers Banning Social Media Behind Bars

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/03/26/inmates-facebook-south-carolina-considers-banning-social-media-bars/

I don't think it should be illegal for an inmate to have a Facebook. The only thing I thing i think  they should be required to do is  post on their Facebook page that they are in jail. People in jail get bored and want to talk and interact with their friends and family just like those who are not in jail. I personally don't see what the big deal is. Now days you can email a person a letter that's in jail instead of sending it though the mail. So why not let them have a Facebook. This law is going to be extremely hard to enforce anyway because a lot of people in jail have cell phones. The sentence for being caught is not even harsh enough to scare inmates into not using Facebook. An extra 30 days is not a long time and how are they going to punish  inmates who have life?

Quality of online social relationships

I wrote a paper on this same topic last semester which discussed weather computer mediated communication was more effective in establishing relationships oppose to Face to Face communication. In this article they are basically doing the same thing. In my opinion Face to Face communication is better to use when establish a relationship. The survey used in this article uses face to face communication, phone, and  email categories  and compared college students surveys with bankers. In this cases talking on the phone is the most popular way to develop a relationship according to college students. While the bankers most popular what to establish relationships was Face to Face communication. I wonder why the author decide to compare bankers and students and not students from to different schools and two different countries i think the survey would have been better. Another thing that the author got from the survey was that people felt closer to those that they had face to face relationships with.

Man- Computer question 1

This article was different because it discussed doing something that seems impossible to accomplish. I think that computers are useful for some aspects of life. However, I do not think that computers will ever have the intelligents to solve social problems or things of that nature. In fact that would be a little weired in my opinion. I mean its like when you call cable to pay your bill or whatever and a computer ask you the same question five times because it cannot understand what you are saying. Then later you are transferred to a actual person and have to repeat everything over again. If computer systems cant understand what you are saying when your just trying to by a bill how are they going to ever evolve to the point of  solving real problems. I just think that people are becoming to dependent on technology and we need to remember that it is important to interact with other humans.
