The technology and society

This article is very interesting I agree that television has an affect on society. I could not  image living in a era where television did not exist. When I was younger television was the center of most of our family gatherings. We would watch fights, games, and movies at the house of who ever had the biggest television. In this article the author talks about the cause and affects of technology. He talks about how television has affected our perception of reality and our relationships in the world. Basically I think he means people generally have a tendency to act like or try to look like what it is they are seeing on television. However, it also depends on the community that a person lives in. Some people think they need to have a new car on big rims and other people might think they need to be skinny and have straight hair. It all depends on what a person is watching on television and where they live.

just like me only better

This article is so true people do create their online avatars to look as close to them selves as possible. My avatar for pogo.com looks similar to me except I dress her up to look like a professional work lady. Some people even dress their avatars up as old women with gray hair.  Also I always wondered were the term avatar derived from and this article says it came from the form that gods took when the came to earth. This is obviously some mythological type of thing.  I found the results of this article to be exactly what I expected them to be most  women avatars have then waist, fair skin, thin lips, and full breast. But I thinks its only because those are the only options available when creating and avatar. Like the options for making an avatar on pogo.com are limited to certain psychical characteristics. Its not like you can create an avatar with full lips, a big butt , or thats over weight because those features are not offered.

community media

While reading this article I was informed that in 2003 44 percent  of Americans had created their own content. This lead me to think about youtube and how people will share anything about themselves with strangers. In hopes of getting a lot of views from the public. However, sometimes videos are funny and other times they are very informative. A person can pretty much search youtube and find out anything from how to change a tire to how to bake a cake.  In the article they also talk about self representation and how people should have a voice and state their opinions and Youtube and blogging are the most popular was to be heard. Its like as soon a someone gets a million hits all of a sudden their on the news. I still find that to be amazing its like one minute I'm watching the news and they are talking about unemployed Americans and for some reason it could lead to them discussing how Rebbecca Black got one million hits on youtube.

Uses and Gratification

This article basically discuss some of the reason that young adults use Social network website. Most of the reasons that they state people use SNS is obvious. People want to be able to talk to one another as fast as possible, the connivance of delivery a message to several people at once, and  stay in touch with friends and family. One participant from the study stated that you can think about what you say before you send it to someone. This is also one of the reasons why I like using email and text messaging because you can make things sound better oppose to talking on the phone , but that's only in some situations in my opinion. Another reason why I believe young adults use Social Networking websites a lot is because they are just board. I know people who tweet every single thing they do and update their Facebook status every week.

10 Fascinating Facebook facts and what they say about us

This is the link below:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/social.media/05/26/facebook.facts.cashmore/index.html?hpt=T2

According to this article 56% of Facebook members think that is not responsible to friend your boss on Facebook. I agree if I had a Facebook I wouldn't friend my boss because it would probably  be filled with pictures of me partying and acting crazy. Which is not something I would want my boss to see. It also said that people in Facebook relationships are happier then single people. I disagree I'm not single, but when I am I'm just as happy as I would be if I were in a relationship. Another interesting fact is that 21% of people would breakup via Facebook. This is sad I hope this 21% is predominately teenagers because that has to be really embarrassing to get dump with millions of people to see. The last fact that caught my attention was that 36% of people checked their Facebook, twitts, and texts after sex , which is just rude and embarrassing for their partners

The medium is the message

This article was hard for me to understand I googled the phase and it said that "The medium is the message" has to do with the way that people perceive a message. In the article it talked about how IBM makes computer equipment its what people think when they here IBM, but what IBM really does is process information.  Marshall McLuhan states in the begging of this article that technology has destroyed depth of involvement in work. I think he means that we depend to much on technology. An example might be how the self checkout lines at stores eliminate jobs for people we might have needed a job. He also states that I.Q test are bias and is based on continuous habits because that is what is considered intelligent and it eliminates the "ear man" and the tactile man. I wonder if this means that in order to be intellectually successful on I.Q. test you have to be a basic person with one specific way of understanding things.

consequences of online social networking

While reading this article I was informed that Facebook started out as a social site that was only for students. Then eventually it evolved into one of the most popular social sites. I know you might think this is nothing new but I never had a face book ,nor have I seen the move about Facebook's creation. I found it interesting that according to the studies in this article talking online to people increased a persons self esteem. I would think meeting people in person and having face to face conversations would increase a persons self esteem. The finding of weather online social groups were different from real life social groups were exactly what I expected them to be. It makes sense that people would make more friends, and meet more people online then they would in real life (in person) social groups. I also found it interesting that women spend more time on online social networks then men but women are less likely to add new friends.

Inmates on Facebook? South Carolina Considers Banning Social Media Behind Bars

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/03/26/inmates-facebook-south-carolina-considers-banning-social-media-bars/

I don't think it should be illegal for an inmate to have a Facebook. The only thing I thing i think  they should be required to do is  post on their Facebook page that they are in jail. People in jail get bored and want to talk and interact with their friends and family just like those who are not in jail. I personally don't see what the big deal is. Now days you can email a person a letter that's in jail instead of sending it though the mail. So why not let them have a Facebook. This law is going to be extremely hard to enforce anyway because a lot of people in jail have cell phones. The sentence for being caught is not even harsh enough to scare inmates into not using Facebook. An extra 30 days is not a long time and how are they going to punish  inmates who have life?

Quality of online social relationships

I wrote a paper on this same topic last semester which discussed weather computer mediated communication was more effective in establishing relationships oppose to Face to Face communication. In this article they are basically doing the same thing. In my opinion Face to Face communication is better to use when establish a relationship. The survey used in this article uses face to face communication, phone, and  email categories  and compared college students surveys with bankers. In this cases talking on the phone is the most popular way to develop a relationship according to college students. While the bankers most popular what to establish relationships was Face to Face communication. I wonder why the author decide to compare bankers and students and not students from to different schools and two different countries i think the survey would have been better. Another thing that the author got from the survey was that people felt closer to those that they had face to face relationships with.

Man- Computer question 1

This article was different because it discussed doing something that seems impossible to accomplish. I think that computers are useful for some aspects of life. However, I do not think that computers will ever have the intelligents to solve social problems or things of that nature. In fact that would be a little weired in my opinion. I mean its like when you call cable to pay your bill or whatever and a computer ask you the same question five times because it cannot understand what you are saying. Then later you are transferred to a actual person and have to repeat everything over again. If computer systems cant understand what you are saying when your just trying to by a bill how are they going to ever evolve to the point of  solving real problems. I just think that people are becoming to dependent on technology and we need to remember that it is important to interact with other humans.
